If the sweet, creamy call of ice cream is difficult to ignore in the winter months, it can be downright impossible not to heed right now. Here’s a possible middle ground between the pull of indulgence and the desire to stay on the healthy track: goat’s milk ice cream.
Goat’s milk ice cream, a favorite of health-conscious celebrities like Kate Hudson and Oprah, has fewer calories and less than half the fat of traditional ice cream made with cow’s milk. (It still has plenty of sugar, though, so remember that a little goes a long way.) Fans of the stuff swear it’s as delicious and creamy as their favorite gelato, and it comes in such mouth-watering flavors as chocolate, fig and strawberry, all for about 150 calories and 5 grams of fat per ½ cup. Compare that to more traditional brands, which can have more than 200 calories and 14 grams of fat per ½ cup.
Or you can make your own at home using goat’s milk and any ice cream maker. This recipe for brown sugar ice cream from Food and Wine sounds scrumptious, though it includes heavy cream and goats milk, upping the fat content. And Dairy Goat Journal offers several recipes, including vanilla and lemon cream and one incorporating cajeta, a sweet caramel made from goat’s milk.
